Waipi`o
Waterfall Adventure 4.5 miles / 4 hr.-Hawaiian
Walkway
"Wonderful
hike! We'll take home some fabulous memories!" Tim & Ellen J., Fresno, CA.
This hike route provides
a rare opportunity to skirt the rim of the Island's most
immense and best-loved valley. Historic
trails take us to places where we can securely
view streams and waterfalls close-up, and the
ocean and valley floor well over 1,000 feet below. Crucial
times in Hawai'i's past unfolded in the scenery at our
feet. Imagination comes alive as the guide's narration
blends with the spectacular scenery to erase
the bounds of time. The hiking here is excellent; the
setting is unmatched anywhere.

Hike
with Hawaiian Walkways' Certified Volcano Guides in
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park where you are
immersed in the fantastic terrain, microclimates, dynamic
geology and flora of Kilauea volcano, unique in the
entire world. Huge craters, steaming vents and
molten lava (when access is feasible) are among
the possibilities here on the youngest and most active
of the Island's five volcanoes. Trail routes
here range from an easy "sampler" to hard-core
14 mile adventures; usually we cover some 6 miles.
Hawaiian Walkways'
routes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompass lush
rain forests, lava tubes, steam vents, craters, a desert,
islands of vegetation isolated by lava flows, and sometimes,
eruption sites with molten lava. We reach into
seldom-visited corners of this active volcano, giving
us uncrowded settings. Kilauea remains
a sacred place for those who follow traditional Hawaiian
practices. Our exploration of these varied realms opens
us to the astonishing scientific story of island creation
and evolution, and the remarkably insightful explanations
of the people of old - ka po'e kahiko - for the phenomena
they observed so well. Location: Kilauea
Volcano
Distance and Walking Time: Up to 6 miles, in about 6
hours Time:
10:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Days of Operation: Daily
Meeting Place: Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park visitor center
Inclusions:
Light backpacks, Rain Wear, Walking Sticks, Food and
Beverages (Deli-Style lunch, Cookies, Macadamia Nuts,
Juice/Soda, and Bottled Water).
Naturalist Guide Services at the ratio of one guide
per ten hikers. Special Notes
NOTE: When flowing lava
is accessible, we will get groups as close as safely
possible.
The footing on hardened lava is rocky and uneven. Closed
shoes are a must. Forest paths are smoother, mostly
on natural surfaces.
Some routes involve descents into craters with elevation
changes of up to 1000 feet total gain and loss.
Because of the different climates in the Kilauea Volcano
region, hikers need to be prepared for sunny, hot weather
(with a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen) and for
cool, perhaps misty weather (with a light jacket/sweatshirt).
Transportation to/from
resorts can be arranged at an additional fee.
For cancellations more than 48 hours before the adventure,

"I
really did see the 'Hidden Kona' that others
would miss!" Bob T., Ogden, UT
A surprisingly short distance
from busy Kailua-Kona is a lush forest
on the slopes of the sleeping volcano called
Hualalai.
There we find a private and very special
sanctuary that nurtures plants, birds, and the
human spirit with its peaceful isolation. As we move quietly through native forest, and
among palms, tree ferns, blossoms and bamboo
from around the world, our senses are soothed
by the cool air, the songs of birds
and the thousand shades of green the
forest displays.
Engaging information is presented about the
wide-range of botanical specimens, and the geographic
context. Many comment on the calm and
peaceful feeling this environment engenders.
