WAILUA
RIVER JUNGLE KAYAK TOUR -
7 Hrs. - Outfitters
Kauai
Wailua
River Kauai Kayak Tour
The
classic Kauai kayak tour- Wailua River kayaking. This is a
gorgeous, calm water jungle stream, and we will paddle deep
into the heart of the island all the way to the shadow of
Mt Wai'ale'ale. After our easy downwind paddle
upstream, we'll tie our kayaks to a tree and take a somewhat
rugged and very beautiful one-mile hike up valley to a dramatic
130' waterfall with a pool at the bottom. We'll sit on some
big basalt boulders at the bottom of the pool and have a delicious
picnic lunch, and then hike back down to our
ruddered tandem open cockpit kayaks for some more fun paddling!
As
we pass through this spectacular and interesting valley
by kayak and on foot, your guide will be sharing
the mana'o (knowledge) of the island: we'll be filling you
in on the history of ancient Kauai and the
how the Ali'i (royalty) and Maka'ainana (common people)
lived and played here in days gone by. We'll learn
about the unique and unusual medicinal and food plants
that inhabit Kauai's Wailua River Valley, as well as identifying
many beautiful ornamental plants, both native and introduced.
All
this will take place as we get to know each other and have
some laughs in this incredible setting.
The
return part of this kayak tour is downstream, but in to
the tradewinds, so we'll be getting a bit of a workout on
this leg of the journey - unlike our Hidden
Falls Kayak Tour in which our Captain picks us up in our
motorized canoe for the the downstream "in to the wind"
leg.
If
you're looking for a bit of a workout, this tour will be
the one for you! Swimming holes, native and
exotic botanical wonders; the Wailua is truly a fantasy
land of Hawaiian deep jungle scenery.

Mid September
-through Mid May Tuesdays
and Thursdays
No
kids under 12 or non-swimmers, please. Not recommended for
those who get seasick. Somewhat strenuous - must be moderately
physically fit, strong of spirit!
Join us on a Kaual kayak tour along Kauai's scenic south
shore from Poipu to Port Allen. This tour is
8 miles long in what typically can become
rough seas by late afternoon. This segment of
the coastline holds some of Kauai's most secluded bays and
beaches, and we will make surf landings on three different
seldom-seen beaches during our day together! After
launching from Kukui'ula Harbor we pass the famous Spouting
Horn a remarkable salt water blowhole. After 45 minutes,
we will surf our kayaks up the beach at Lawai kai, the exquisitely
beautiful site Queen Emma's summer home. As we have gotten
an early start and you may be ready for a pick-me-up, your
guide will bust out a jug of hot coffee and a bag of muffins
for you to enjoy as you stroll the beach in the golden morning
light. We continue downwind pass the white sand beach and
barrier reef zone near Palama's Point. As we
paddle downwind, we will hoping to see interesting marine
life such as spinner dolphins and migratory Humpback whales.
After 7 miles, we are ready for lunch. For
that we land at a special place to eat and relax at a big
protected bay known as wahiawa where you can comb the 1/2
mile crescent shaped sandy paradise, play in the water,
snorkeling the fringes of the bay. Meanwhile your guide
will lay out a tasty picnic lunch with a scrumptious brownie
that may inspire a nap, which is fully endorsed. Around
mid-afternoon after another brief paddle, our driver will
arrive to whisk you away to the Poipu resort area.
What
time? 7:00 am to 3pm. What to wear and bring? Swimwear, shorts,
t-shirt, windbreaker or light raincoat, sport-type sandals
or aqua socks, waterproof sunscreen, billed hat with keeper,
sun-glasses with keeper, towel, waterproof camera. Many
of these items can be purchased at our Poipu shop. We also
recommend over-the-counter medication for seasickness that
won't cause drowsiness: best taken the night before the
tour, as well as the day of the tour.
Food and drink? You'll be drinking a cuppa joe and munching
on a blueberry muffin bright and early at Lawai Kai- the
first beach landing.
We'll have a GREAT lunch: your choice of
either a Turkey Watercress Wrap (smoked turkey, watercress
cream cheese, sprouts, cucumber, tomato, onion, and black
olives in a tortilla), or a Mediterranean Veggie Wrap (hummus,
lettuce, tomato, kalamata olives, cucumber, and feta cheese
in a tortilla). Lunch comes with pasta salad and a chocolate
chip cookie.

are available thoughout the day. NOTE:

Mid-May through Mid-September
This
is a 16 mile Kauai Kayak
trip to one of one of the most beautiful and remote
of the world's shorelines. We meet early,
in Poipu, and ride together in our 15-pax van to the launch
site in Haena. After about an hour's paddle we'll come upon
the famed sea caves of Na Pali, entering if sea conditions
permit. We'll raft up our kayaks for juice and snacks at
mid-morning. We paddle a total of 11 miles in the morning
to our first landing, which is at Milolii, the
site of an ancient Hawaiian fishing community, where we'll
have lunch. Typically we arrive at Milolii
between 1 and 2 pm, so the morning is long! After lunch
we have a 4- mile paddle in typically calm water to Polihale,
where our van will be waiting for us. When we return to
our Poipu store, we will have circumnavigated the entire
island!
A
Friendly Reality Check: this is a very long, somewhat strenuous
paddle in typically heavy seas. Don't sign up unless you
are up for a good workout and maybe a challenge. While this
tour is best enjoyed by people who are physically fit and
have some basic paddling experience, you may
join us as a first time kayaker if you consider yourself
to be athletically inclined and quick to learn new sports.
Of course, this trip is not for non-swimmers.
Warning:
If you are prone to severe seasickness this trip is not
for you. If you feel that you may get nauseous, but not
severely so, we recommend motion sickness medicine such
as Bonine, Dramamine, or Triptone (over the counter).
Equipment:
We use tandem, open-cockpit, or, sit-on-top type, self-bailing
kayaks with foot pedal controlled rudders to facilitate
safety and ease of operation. You'll be given a lightweight
fiberglass paddle with a tether, life vest, and dry bag
as well.
Lunch
and refreshments are provided by us and include
spring water, juice, snack bars, deli sandwiches and sodas.
Vegetarian available on request. There's lot's of room in
the kayak, so feel free to bring along additional drinks
and snacks- no alcoholic beverages, please.
Check
in time is 6:00 am sharp at our shop in Poipu. Return
times vary quite a bit; best guess is around 7:00pm NOTE:
